Ground Up Polo Bike at NAHBS 2013

Ground Up is one of those brands that always has something creative in store, this year with builder Eric Baar’s own polo bike, the only such bike on display this year. Metal flake paint makes it pop, and the removeable rear triangle makes it easy to pack and fly with the bike to far off […]

Silk Cycles Packable Bike at NAHBS 2013

Silk Cycles is a long standing Japanese bicycle builder, with a certain affinity for small tubes and truss-like construction. The pictured bike breaks in half with two bolts, packing within itself more or less, with the downtube mounted dropouts cradeling one of the wheels within the frame.

Independent Fabrication Gravel Racer at NAHBS 2013

Gravel and rough but not off-road racing is exploding right now, with small local races attracting larger fields every time around. Independent Fabrications is answering the call with this disc brake equipped roadish bike based on their Club Racer model that accepts larger volume tires and has geometry more suited for all day hauls.

Breadwinner at NAHBS 2013

Ira Ryan and Tony Pereira have joined forced to create Breadwinner Cycles, a combined effort to overcome capacity issues and grow a sustainable framebuilding business that can be scaled beyond what a single builder can create. Breadwinner has a handful of models each with custom sizing, all TIG welded to keep costs more manageable than […]

611Rensho at NAHBS 2013

Six Eleven bicycle company out of Roanoke VA is one of my favorites every year, and 2013 did not disappoint with this 3Rensho inspired build. Those are real-deal 3Rensho buttressed head lugs and bottom bracket shell, with recreated track ends and seat lug to match the frames out of the long closed, legendary Japanese frame […]

Shamrock Cycles NAHBS Preview

The North American Handmade Bicycle Show is just a week away. It’s always a letdown when those who can’t make it to the show miss out on the unveilings of their local bike builders, but here in Indianapolis local bicycle builder, Shamrock Cycles, held a pre-NAHBS showing for all of us who can’t head out […]

SimWorks at NAHBS

With their storied cycling tradition, it should come as no surprise that the Japanese have an especially well developed appreciation for fine bicycles and components. And as anyone who routinely attends NAHBS knows, our friends from across the Pacific make the journey in droves. This year was no exception, including the folks behind SimWorks, who […]

Naked at NAHBS

With the exception of some weird old guy in the bushes across from the convention center, the only one Naked at NAHBS was the venerable Sam Whittingham, who rode from Eureka to Sacramento for the convention. This touring bike features a custom stem with an integrated headlight. Check out www.timetogetnaked.com.
