Re:Cycling – Restoring a 1970′s 10-speed

Re:Cycling from Gabe Przygoda on Vimeo.

This short documentary highlights the restoration of an old 1970′s ten speed bicycle. With new parts and paint, it’s been turned into a modern fixie (with an homage to Steve Zissou).

I’m not sure Restore is the right Title for this video.

Didn’t see them use the right tool for the job once, Hammer to remove cotter pins & Crescent Spanner on the wheel nuts makes me cringe.

    Good production tho..

    Rob’s right, it wasn’t a restoration. It was re-creation.

For this project I wanted to target an audience similar to my fellow college students (hoping they would take initiative to dig out their parent’s 10 speed from the garage rather than buy a Wal-get bike that would rust away). It wasn’t an ideal build or under ideal circumstances, however it was my first attempt to make something of my own. The bike was salvaged from a dumpster and allowed me to make mistakes and learn a lot about building bikes in the process. (P.S. Rob, those cranks sucked anyway so it was never in the cards to keep them.)

Since this video, I’ve built several bikes from the ground up, invested in tools, refined my skill, and logged a lot of miles. It’s an honor to have my project featured on Urban Velo.
