No Helmet for Obama

Obama bicycle rideI noticed this this on BikeBlogNYC… Speculating on the reason as to why Obama may be shunning a helmet while the kids sport them, Paul White, leader of Transportation Alternatives said, “Helmets look goofy – you look a little dorky. When you’re the leader of the free world you have to look tough.”

I wonder if the riot police will feel the same way about their choice in headgear at the upcoming G20 Summit?

It’s actually the guy from Transportation Alternatives who’s quoted as saying that “helmets look goofy”.

  2. dukiebiddleAugust 31, 2009 at 8:01 am

    What dmg said.

When the picture was first published, before the helmet ninnies had a chance to chime in, I groaned. How long was it going to be, I wondered, before the helmet missionaries and the media jump in and pretend that it is irresponsible and/or a poor example to leisurly peddle at 6mph on a designated path.

One has to wonder what the annual fatality and significant head trauma rates are for this type of cycling. My best educated guess is zero fatalities and zero significant head traumas per year for Obama’s age demographic in the United States. But I suppose actual safety and actual statistics aren’t the true concern here.

dmg is right… your post title is misleading. As long as we’re speculating, I’ll guess that he went without the helmet because he knows how to saunter down a bike path without smashing his head into anything.

fuck obama and the g20 – however, if he doesn’t want to wear a helmet then who’s business is it? it’s his head – piss off!

In ten years, joggers will be wearing helmets.

“Most bike accidents just happen. Bicycles up and turn over by themselves…”

That’s certainly how all of my accidents have occurred. I always wear a helmet now because I just can’t anticipate all of my bike’s unpredictable urges.

can we ever just STOP this stupid helmet debate? if you don’t wanna wear a helmet, don’t. if you do, do. end of conversation. do what’s right for you and F**K what anyone else says.

I was out riding yesterday and had to chuckle over all the folks toodling along the rail-trail with un-buckled helmets. That cracks me up. I agree that everyone should make their own choice whether or not to wear a helmet, but if you put one on without even bothering to buckle it then you’ve just converted it from a helmet to nothing more than a really ugly hat.

The kids are wearing helmets because Massachusetts law says they must, and Barry’s not because he doesn’t need one.

were all forgetting the real question here:
    What is he riding?

I adore our new President. He has brought hope once again upon our nation. His goals of strengthening our democracy and establishing a democracy in Afghanistan are noble. Do not criticize his not wearing a helmet. He is in charge and he can do as he pleases. He needs our support not our derision.

Let’s stick with what’s important, on the same page of the NY Daily News is this:

    Ex-teacher turns to pornography
Florida teacher fired after posing in racy pictures lands a new career – in porn.

Now that’s what I call newsworthy.

    @kali durga:

if you’ll notice one of Barry’s associates seems to be doing the un-buckled helmet stunt in the pictures:

100% agree with dukiebiddle – I wondered what the scaremongering helmet-pushers would say about the photo.

I would say it is very responsible and an excellent example to show that cycling is safe and does not require a helmet.
