Melon Helmets at Eurobike

melon_eurobike2013-2 It is said that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and if you believe that to be case then Nutcase Helmets should find themselves quite flattered. Eurobike 2013 was at least my 20th bicycle industry tradeshow or large expo and I’ve never seen anything quite like the Melon Helmets booth — the product, the display and the branding is so remarkably similar to Nutcase that I honestly thought I was entering their display area. Melon Helmets is out of Germany and claims to be “the inventor of original urban active cycle helmets” with their line of colorful in-mold helmets. A spin-dial fit adjustment helps it fit your melon, with a magnetic buckle closure and Coolmax pads further keeping them comfortable. An EPS shell provides the head protection, and a truly unique optional visor snaps in and out of the shell to shield your eyes from the sun with UV400 protection in a number of translucent colors. I was astounded about this too. I could not believe anyone would dare blatantly copy another company’s idea from start to finish. Aren’t they afraid of being sued? I am so glad someone wrote about it…I wondered if I was imagining things. To me Nutcase is the original brand and everyone knows that. Haven’t they been around for like 10 years or something? No one has ever seen these Melon ones until now. The fit is also a bit strange.

Anyone with 2 eyes can see Melon Helmets has copied Nutcase. I don’t know how Red Dot could give them an award for copying

Actually I will give you all the facts. Nutcase had originally people who are now from Melon. The USA fellows did some shenanigans of their own and kept the business. The original designer of the Nutcase improved the design with Melon. Melon is way better than Nutcase. Nutcase ventilation system is from the 90′s and has never improved. This is why they got the Red Dot. I will dare to say Nutcase try to play smart and then ones who got thrown out to the street founded Melon outsmarted them. Kudos for the Germans!

Obviously there seems to be something special about Melon Helmets. They got not only the Red Dot. 2013 they got the Eurobike Award as well for the technology. I can’t see there a copy. Quite simple, Melon has more technology, Nutcase has more graphics. BTW, isn’t Nutcase using the same shell type, which was invented by Pro Tec nearly 30 years ago? Funny or not?

Nutcase, it’s team and its design is firmly American and was never German. Anyway customers can see what’s copied.
