    So what happened to the van driver – where any assault charges ever filed? I thought everyone in GB was nice and civilized – scary – one episode like that and you wonder why people are afraid to take to the roads.

    What a lunatic that driver was. Absolutely no excuse for sideswiping a bicyclist and then assaulting him. This man should be in jail.

    I did feel like that bicyclist sure was giving himself very narrow passage in most of the scenes. I think he was riding way too far to the left (our equivalent of riding too far to the right) when that van tried to pass him before the intersection. I think all too often bicyclists create close calls by inviting motorists to pass them too closely. He got pinned against the parked cars because he was trying to share a lane that was too narrow to safely share.

    My $.02.

    Ben really handles that situation well. He realized that the driver was having an episode of road rage and got out of the situation.

    I love how the van license plate is fuzzed out at the end of the video, but completely visible in the frames before the stop. If I commuted in London, I’d keep an eye out and keep my distance….

    I don’t know about the outcome of Ben’s video, but one of the others (the roundabout crash) did result in a prosecution – the contributor is “Andy B” in this thread;

    “… by inviting motorists to pass them too closely. He got pinned against the parked cars because he was trying to share a lane that was too narrow to safely share.”

    Yep, although the alternative can be tailgating and harassment by the driver – ultimately the responsibility to drive in a manner that doesn’t put others at risk lies with the driver, not pedestrians, cyclists or other drivers.

    You are right. As volatile as the driver was it is unclear how he would have reacted to a bicyclist using the full lane. He might have just run him over from behind. Nutso. Ben’s handing of the situation was nothing short of miraculous. I would have been hard pressed not to swing my lock at his face in aggressive defense. Didn’t the driver actually punch him?

    Luckily 99.9% of drivers aren’t that whacked out. But often they are stupid enough to pass too closely when given the chance. At least this has been my experience.

    The helmet camera is a really good idea. Not only to protect yourself, it also saves you the trouble of getting bent out of shape because someone is being an ass. Because you have proof the guy is an ass. And thus allowing you to handle the situation in more of an Adult fashion.

    why on earth did BEN stop riding? i figure if you stop and give the driver enough time to get out and in yo face…well you might be dumb enough to get your ass kicked and need a helmet cam to commute. keep rockin BEN, and when the drivers get tough, you roll on, DON’T STOP!
