Burry Stander Killed in Training

standerIt’s always depressing when a cyclist is taken out by a vehicle, but I find it even more sobering when a champion athlete is killed in the act. Burry Stander, World Champion mountain biker, was killed by a taxi while riding in South Africa yesterday. Sponsored in part by Specialized, Stander placed 5th in the London Olympic Games, among other accolades.

It is sobering to me because these are riders that aren’t necessarily braving traffic every day like the rest of us and all it takes is one venture into the streets and one collision to end your life, no matter how skilled and fit you may be. The specifics of the incident are still being hashed out and Cycling News will continue to update the story as it develops.

In the meantime, keep your head up, be safe out there and keep pressing for safer bicycling infrastructure.

Shocked and deeply saddened. I started watching the XC World Cup races this year and Burry was a favorite of mine, gave his all and then some. Thoughts with his family.
