This comment is coming to you from Japan! Well, Tokyo, where we really are safe, despite some of the wild rumour and speculation in the news.

The old people here are hard, but blithe about terror. Remember that if this woman was seventeen at the end of WWII, and maybe fifteen when American bombing of Japan and its shipping got into full swing, she’s been through hell once already. Utter stoics, they hold little ill will (and don’t hold Pearl Harbor against her, she was a kid!).

I just put up a post speculating about evacuation by bicycle or by scooter. Each has its place, but a car is useless.

    Good point, Mr. S!
This observation applies to NYC as well. Driving here is difficult even on a good day. Measly 2 inches of snow brings the city to a halt. In case of a cataclysmic event, such as an earthquake – forget about it. In a situation like that a bicycle can literally be the difference between life and death.
