Hey Shelly! Good to see you here. I wonder if you’ve been keeping track of the city-biking miles logged over the years. But maybe one shouldn’t mention it – NYS car insurance put me in “assigned risk” for never having an accident in decades – said I was statistically due to die multiple times. The web has ears!

IMO Ford Crown Victoria is the least of NYC taxi problems. The biggest one is the taxi driver. The fabled old-school, gray-haired, wise driver who knows the city like the palm of his hand is an extremely rare creature. Most of NYC cab drivers are semi-literate third world immigrants who drive like degenerates, and don’t even know the major destinations. This is a direct result of poor working conditions: low wages, and long hours required to pay off the ridiculous medallion price ($600k). Jobs like that attract mostly those who have few other opportunities to earn a living. Until the city modifies its taxi policy, the quality of service will be low, fancy new cabs or old gas-guzzlers.
I can think of at least two measures that will improve NYC cabs: eliminating the middleman – the medallion owner, and introduction of London-like city knowledge exam.

Great for a pedestrian about to be creamed, but for bikers a gauntlet of doors – with that stupid pedestrian at the end. What a trap.
