Thomson 31.8 Handlebar

Although they produce a very limited array of products, the folks down at Thomson are always experimenting with new ideas. Noting the trendy, completely straight handlebars that some urban fixed gear riders are using, they decided to lob the clamp end off a 31.8 x 410mm seatpost and use it for a handlebar.

  • HA! This was probably a returned BROKEN seatpost. Thomsons quality is much less that people think. They are VERY durable… until they reach the failure threshold then the shatter catastrophically! In addition to that.. the quality control is AWFUL and many people get a component that breaks or cracks just from looking at it cross-eyed. Google it, you will find plenty of people with Thomson stories to tell. Thomson will always swear up and down that you did not use a properly calibrated torque wrench or some other lame flimsy excuse as to why their indestructible parts have failed due to improper installation. REALLY, I’m suppose to bomb down this HUGE drop with this stem, but if I use a torque wrench that is off by a tiny fraction of a N.m…. oh no, it can’t handle that. There is no way they actually used it this way because they know it would snap in half.. Thomson alloy is strong, but very brittle.

  • Awesome. Simply beautiful.

  • why are companys who make legit products catering to people who cannot choose handlebars that compliment their anatomy and allow them to breath?

  • besides the fact that there is a huge profit margin in selling flashy shit to idiots

  • hard to ride a bike without cranks.

  • I always thought one Thomson post per bike wasn’t enough…

I’m not a big fan of straight hipster handlebars, but I’ve ridden plenty of Thomson bars and stems in my day. Never had a failure, not even a snapped bolt.

  • Yah, thomson gear is key. But those hand-o’s look super uncomfortable. Give me a thomson-made albatross bar, and maybe we can talk.

  • I think that LOB is to pitch something in a high, curved arch, and LOP is to chop something off, casually.

As Mark Twain once said, the difference between the RIGHT word and ALMOST the right word is the difference between LIGHTNING and the lightning BUG.

  • Doesn’t that look really dangerous…hope you never go over the handlebar with a set-up like that.

  • Some people will buy stupid stuff, so some companies will make stupid stuff for them to buy.

  • dumb. first of all you can breath. second, i think the pedals stink out wider than that, so does your butt and shoulders, so it defeats the purpose of dodging cars. all for the look and it looks dumb.

  • Thomson products are with out a doubt the best handlebar and seat post made. They are manufacturing experts of many things and not just silly bike parts.
Sorry to hear that little mike-y (fred) can’t figure out how to use his torque wrench! Manufactures give torque specs for a reason.
Little mikey, “thomson” is not an alloy, it is a brand name you twerp!
