The Bent Basket – Kickstarter

I’ve become very critical of most bike-related Kickstarter projects lately, finding most of them to be gimmicky and really not all that necessary or progressive. I’m still a little on the fence with this one, but figured it can’t hurt to at least give a little exposure to the idea. The Bent Basket is a simple, clean looking front rack and “basket” based off the form and function of skateboard decks. I like the simplistic aesthetic and the straps are pretty ingenious as far as offering ways to secure various sized objects, though it seems the carrying capacity might be prohibitively limited. I wish the video showed the basket carrying larger items, if that is practical. Regardless, for a simple carrying device, I’ve yet to see one that looks better than this anyway. They have a ways to go to fulfill the funding at this point, but are certainly getting exposure for the idea.

Meh. First of all, let’s call it what it is. A tray. Not a basket.

Secondly let’s call it what it is. Something for people who think they are to hip or cool to use a regular old basket. Which works perfectly fine and often doesn’t even need straps because it is deep enough to hold stuff.

Thirdly it looks weird on a bike. Especially on that white mountain bike, which apparently someone thinks is a good bike for hauling stuff around the city. Even though it has no rear rack. Don’t get me started on dweebs riding OFF ROAD BIKES in the CITY.

Since this thing apparently requires a front rack to hold it up, I’m gonna give these kids a real idea to work with. Make a wooden platform that folds up out of the way on top of the rack, and unfolds into a tray as needed. So you don’t have to ride around with a basket sticking out all the time. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. Other than apparently it is no longer cool.
