I like these kind of bikes for commuting, but agree with recur on price. Honestly, I'm also not sold on the need for disc brakes. I acquired a steel, cross-ish frame a while back (Masi Spec CX) for a bit over $1000 and love it. Pick up any bike in that category (Volpe, etc), and replace the more than likely crappy cantis with cheap Tektro CR720's and you'll have a reliable, chatter-free stopper. I also like the convenience of being able to swap a set of wheels with a proper road bike if needed. I hear disc brakes are coming to road bikes too though, so maybe I'm just getting old and crotchety.

While I find this style of bike to be ideal for so many real-world purposes, and while I'm extremely excited to see more and more takes on this style emerging from big-name manufacturers like Specialized here, Kona (Rove), Charge(Filter Apex), Raleigh(Roper) - the price point really throws me. All of the completes that I mentioned hover in the $1700 territory. I really like the spec of this model, but I can't see why $1650 is the price tag for no-name steel tubing, made in China bike with a Tiagra group.
For that price, I'd want to see at least a 105 rear derailleur. Of the group I mentioned, the Charge Filter would be my choice.

I do like how discrete this bike looks. That stealthy black wouldn't attract undo thief attention on nyc streets.
