Specialized Tricross Elite Steel Disc

Back in Urban Velo #33 we reviewed the aluminum Specialized Tricross Elite Disc, a 2012 model that is available with slightly different spec for 2013, along with the pictured steel version. My main criticism of the tested model was that the aluminum fork, while light and great looking, could be harsh when the going got rough. The Tricross Elite Steel Disc Triple packs on an extra pound or two in the sake of comfort with the steel frame and lugged crown steel fork, each with clearance for big tires and featuring mounts for fenders and racks for a comfortable commute or gravel road epic. I found the aluminum version a capable all around road, gravel and trail bike perfect for the serious commuter or the person that just can’t keep stick to one surface and would expect that fans of gravel roads and steel will find this version to their liking.

    While I find this style of bike to be ideal for so many real-world purposes, and while I’m extremely excited to see more and more takes on this style emerging from big-name manufacturers like Specialized here, Kona (Rove), Charge(Filter Apex), Raleigh(Roper) – the price point really throws me. All of the completes that I mentioned hover in the $1700 territory. I really like the spec of this model, but I can’t see why $1650 is the price tag for no-name steel tubing, made in China bike with a Tiagra group.
    For that price, I’d want to see at least a 105 rear derailleur. Of the group I mentioned, the Charge Filter would be my choice.

    I do like how discrete this bike looks. That stealthy black wouldn’t attract undo thief attention on nyc streets.

    I like these kind of bikes for commuting, but agree with recur on price. Honestly, I’m also not sold on the need for disc brakes. I acquired a steel, cross-ish frame a while back (Masi Spec CX) for a bit over $1000 and love it. Pick up any bike in that category (Volpe, etc), and replace the more than likely crappy cantis with cheap Tektro CR720′s and you’ll have a reliable, chatter-free stopper. I also like the convenience of being able to swap a set of wheels with a proper road bike if needed. I hear disc brakes are coming to road bikes too though, so maybe I’m just getting old and crotchety.

    Bought the Tricross Elite last year. It’s a real piece of junk. The FSA crank failed twice (arm got loose ans destroyed the threads). Had to pay for a new crack… Had to service and repair the back wheel after less than 500 miles (cones and bearings) and the seat post clamp snapped. The bike feels cheap and I surely wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. Stay away from Specialized
