Well, hell, struck a raw nerve on the $5,000. bike Sea Otter fans? Sorry, I missed the part where you advocated being poor and insisted that people ride their $300. fixed gear machines.
I feel it is just ride your bike, whatever you have to enjoy. The point is the the Sea Otter has turned into a 3-ring, expensive ride, expensive rig, trade show-bike race social event with so many companies spending $10's of thousands of dollars to attend. A fossil fuel expense extravaganza. And if you dig it, go for it. And if you don't, instead of just staying home, the is this ride with none of the pretense or hoopla. Some of us work damn hard (in a cubicle) and don't want to encounter the ellitest

Wow, "Joe Rider," did you crash your $5000 road bike and get some gravel in your vagina? Or are you upset that people are having just as much fun on their thrift store specials as you are on your expensive fancy bike? If people want to have fun on cheap bikes why not let them? Maybe because your stuck in your cubicle working to pay off that expensive bike of yours?

I rode to work today on a fixie I built up from a frame I found in a ditch. I can't imagine spending $5000 on a bicycle. Well, ok, I can- but I won't. I'm not poor but I'm not stupid, either.

And I'm happy with my fixie.

I just might have to find a middle ground here. I will race Sea Otter, which is not cheap to race at, then race Sleaze Otter on my $2500 Single Speed MTB. I will advocate the Middle Class.

Wow Joe. Most ridiculous article? Really? I'd hate to cook your eggs wrong.

My guess is, it's not so much about messengers and fashion as it is about people wanting to have a good time without the norm of conspicuous consumption. It's hard to find anything wrong with that.

Probably the most ridiculous article I've read on the internet in quite some time. You are kidding yourself if you don't think the cycling industry is making money off the current "I want to be a bike messenger" fad. And yes it's a fad, but what the end result will be are 20 somethings that eventually grow into thirtysomethings and will get jobs because their parents won't be supporting them any longer. Many might actually become prosperous in their dreaded fields of work and this will result in an excess of disposable income which they might actually spend on , gasp , a carbon or titanium road bike.

Trust me it's a much better sensation to bomb down Hwy 1, or any other mountain pass at 45mph on a 5000.00 road bike than it is on my 300.00 fixed gear commuter.

Why advocate being poor?
