SE Bikes Tripel 3-Speed

2-2014_SE_TRIPEL_GREY_SIDE

The SE Bikes urban line has always had a creatively spec’ed bike or two in the line, and for 2014 the trend seems to be continuing. The Tripel has the same frame as the Draft line of street track bikes, but features a Shimano Nexus 3-speed internally geared hub and a rear coaster brake. Swept back bars lend an upright stance, the relatively agressive geometry keeps it manueverable on the trail or through traffic. Rough calculations show the gear range being from about 53 – 96 gear inches, enough range for most urban riding. I’d add a front brake myself, but at $379 even with an added set of fenders for all weather riding it won’t break the bank.

What do you think of rear coaster brakes for first time riders? I love the internal gear hubs, although mostly familiar with sturmey archer hubs like on the Brompton folding bike. Thanks again for the great review! – jack
