Safety Wing

safetywing The Safety Wing is an EU-approved safety device that attaches to your seatstay and puts a reflector 12″ out to the side, making the bike that much more visible at night and encouraging a wider berth from passing drivers. The product is clearly more for the type of rider that already has a flag and a rear-view mirror rather than your prototypical twenty-something rider, but I can see the folding Safety Wing being useful for those with cargo bikes and kids trailers as an extra “wide load” warning.

  • Uh, thanks but no thanks. I’ll just use a bright tail light.

  • What you really need is a big, fucking, metal arm that swings out further than that with some razor sharp, spinning, blades on it. Now that would be cool !!

  • The old Nordic Safety Flag again! They couldn’t sell them in europe so they’re trying to offload them on to you. As if a small lurid lenght of plastic is going to make any difference!…

  • I had one of these things. It fell off somewhere. Maybe whacked off by squeezing through traffic. Looking over your left shoulder lots so drivers don’t know what you’re up to works better.

  • Good for smacking pedestrians in the ass as you wing by them. This thing is ridiculous.

  • so the lady or gentleman on the cellphone in the 1800lb+ box on wheels on the narrow street has that much bigger an area to aim for???? I’d rather have an annoyingly bright light on the back of my bike thank you just the same

  • I can see these being a decent addition to safety for commuters. I know in Vermont there is a 3 foot rule when passing bikers so something like this would be a little bit of assurance that cars are less likely to take your elbows out.

  • Well they should make them 3 feet long then. Otherwise all they do is give the bearded, pannier toting, engineer types (who are the only ones to ever buy them) a false sense of security.

  • Here’s my solution, created just after Florida passed their own “Three Foot Rule”:

  • Well done GR. That’s innovation for ya!

  • Hey Ghost Rider…..now THAT I would pay money for. LOL

  • The things are a menace. They encourage as “So that’s how much room a cyclist needs” mentality among drivers, who will then try to pass as close to the flag as they can.

As others have said, lights & good lane position are a way better strategy.

Front and rear lights are required in my state for cycling at night, not that even half of the night riders follow that law. So this flag will go well with the lights on my bike, flashing light on top of my helmit, bright reflective yellow vest, and blinking light on the back of my vest. Most likely it will not phase the drunks, nothing seems to, except maybe a swift blow to the face with a rock as they try to run me down.

I’ve thought about putting a big yellow sign on the back of my bike that says something like, “Police Road Block Ahead, 50 Feet.” Then mount two flashing lights on top to make it look like a road sign.

Ghost Rider how much for your arrow? LOL. Very nice.

  • A flag and a mirror…I wouldn’t go any where (almost) without my mirror…

We are not suggesting that this safety wing be a replacement for your night time safety equipment and lights, as some of the posts above allude to. We believe this is a great addition to your lights, and other night time safety equipment, to help you stand out more. I personally use one and in general the cars do give me more room at night.
