Red Bicyclette Wine

Red Bicyclette is a French wine marketed in the US by E. & J. Gallo. The grapes are grown in the Languedoc-Roussillon region of southern France, where people have been making wine for more than 2000 years. Even if you know nothing about wine, you can appreciate that.

Red Bicyclette isn’t the cheapest wine on the shelf, nor is it expensive by any stretch of the imagination. It tastes great and it fits well within the budget of most wine drinkers. On the other hand at roughly $10/bottle, it’s several times the price of “Two Buck Chuck” and doesn’t taste a whole lot different. The four varieties I’ve tried are slightly sweet, appropriately dry and overall very, very drinkable. Hiccup…

I would have a lot more respect for a French wine that was called Bicyclette Rouge–I think the French would, too. But with Americans, I guess the only foreign words you can use are those with English cognates. Velo Rouge would be straight out.

I’m a big fan of South American wines, and another vineyard that features bicycles prominently on their labels is Cono Sur:

Not as cute and “artsy” of a label, but as a rule of thumb I tend to shy away from wines with labels or names that are too flashy or too clever… and that’s just based on years of experience.

Like the Red Bicyclette wines, these all seem to be in the $10 < $15 range, which is the only range I’ll pay for wine.
