I think BRANDING cycling like this is exactly what turns people away from the simplicity of cycling. Working in the cycling and retaling industry opens all types of conversation for debate. I find that people who come in and want to buy bicycles and build their own get turned off when they see and hear about things that glorify a wastefull lifestyle. It no longer is about riding a bicycle, rather it becomes what bicycle do you have and how expensive is it. Based on the components and choices of companies the cyclists in that video have, I can assure you that they’re upwards of $1,000 and steadily increase in price exponentially. Now spending money towards a local economy, or supporting a buyers market like the internet is great from any sellers stand point, however I can say from experiece with years in the industry of cycling that producing a lifestyle that is over the top in any logical sense is outright silly and will harm most concious cyclists view towards the overall purpose of cycling.
The choice is simple, do as you want to and spend your money as you wish. I just wish people thought about how to make cycling better for their communty than how to make cycling hip up their life.
