It’s a shame they couldn’t be fixing bikes for US kids to ride to school.

It’s a shame, kids in America number one really don’t want bikes to go to school, and two KIDS IN AMERICA HAVE STOLEN ENOUGH FROM AFRICA, with their need for fancy cell phones. That take precious metals stolen from Afica….. think about it.

    You’re completely missing the point.

And kids haven’t stolen anything. If their behavior is a problem, it’s their parents fault. If they were self-sufficient they wouldn’t be kids anymore.

My response wasn’t about the kids in Africa. My point was that a) I would personally rather help people close to home and b) we SHOULD be encouraging our own kids to ride.

And yes, I now realize this is a UK article, though that changes very little. Is there nothing the prisoners could be doing to help the people in their own country? You know, the ones paying the bill for their incarceration?

If you want to help the people of Africa, send them a box of condoms. After they figure out how to feed the kids they have maybe they can start thinking about having more.

    Jeffs, John,
You both have valid points. From the UK side of the pond in the 70s our major name in bike manufacture convinced us that bikes are toys and the American dream continued to take over. Over two world wars your economy was turned from agricultural to industrial. The massive industrial growth during WW2 in the US could not be reversed without the depression of the 1930s looking like a minor overspend. Hence we ended up with the must buy now society which currently lets us buy things which have no reason to exist. Hence the world has the ipod, the Chrysler Grand Voyager and “Friends, the one where bugger all happened.” Unreliable, lower quality than their predecessors but we run western world where we all have to buy stuff to keep our burgeoning populations employed. This might look like an anti US pop. It isn’t. I’m very happy to still be speaking English and the US is a main player in why that happened. If one of our prisons is trying to teach felons that doing something for someone else, where ever they live, is a better way to go through life then well done. As they re doing it with bikes even better.

Can kids in America still ride their bikes to school? I don’t recall having to worry about being run off the road by an SUV when I used to ride to school.

of course you’re run off the road..how dare you be riding your bike and get in an SUV’s way
