Portland Records Another Year With 0 Cycling Fatalities

portland_pdwdanPortland is widely heralded as one of, if not the, best places for cycling in the United States. Most of us pay a visit and are stunned by the infrastructure, and the numbers of bikes on the road. It’s an amazing sight to behold. Did you know that in 1999, 2000, 2002, 2006, 2008, 2010 and now 2013 Portland has had no cycling fatalities? That’s a track record to be proud of. Via grist.

Not true! I was there visiting in May, 2013. A semi-truck turned right at a corner, had a biker in their blind spot, and caught and killed this lady! Amazed it doesn’t happen more often. Be defensive and aware 24/7 while biking!

The semi right-hook happened in 2012, actually: http://bikeportland.org/2012/05/16/collision-at-sw-3rd-and-madison-leaves-woman-with-life-threatening-injuries-71838

We had a few pretty serious collisions this year, but nothing fatal that I know of.
