According to reports, approximately 10,000 people marched on Minneapolis, calling for an end to the war in Iraq. Eventually the peaceful protest escalated into violence, and police officers on horseback, motorcycles and bicycles chased a group of protesters. More than 250 arrests were made, including award winning journalist Amy Goodman of Democracy Now! Read more over at Michael Green’s Bike Blog.

Seems kind of dumb for protestors against violence to turn violent. Makes the protest kind of stupid.
Having been to a few protests over the years, I can tell you that in each and every situation I’ve personally been in the police have been the first to escalate the situation to violence. It pays to see the other side of the mainstream coverage of protests. Being struck with a baton and having chemical weapons deployed upon you due to your political beliefs in a supposed free country is a hell of a wake-up call to what is really going on.
I’ll second what brad says. Don’t be naive, Terry. Also, can you see the difference between a clash between police and protesters standing up for justice, and a war that has killed nearly one hundred thousand people in all?
I’m not naive, and I agree with Brad too. Each situation is different and unless you are there, you can’t judge what really happened because each side has their own story to tell. But when a protest against violence become violent itself, it loses its effectiveness to a degree.
And I definitely agree that no one should blindly believe the mainstream media. And I don’t plan on debating the war, because both sides have good points to make. However, I do believe the world is a better place without Sadam Hussian killing off hundreds of thousands of people himself. Someone had to stand up for justice for those people too. Or don’t those people matter. And again, I also can understand the other side of the issue.
Whoever said ALL the protesters were against violence? Just cause the media gets a soundbite or two doesn’t mean crap.
On a side note….Dear media, back off! Seriously, how many protesters are in that scuffle and how many independent journalists are there? Get out of the way! or get in the action!
If people are willing to get pushy with their protesting, don’t be supprised when the people hired to keep the peace push back. Besides, the Republicans are not in complete power in congress, so maybe the protestors were a week late.
The protestors were also in Denver. I guess YOU were a week late on that one.
