Chains are just too heavy to lug around. A quality u-lock from OnGuard or Kryptonite plus a cable especially if you have a QR skewer on the front. Some people still don't want to pay the extra for a good u-lock but thieves with a bolt cutter will always home in on a cable only locked bike.

I live in Milwaukee and find the TC to be a really good setup. U-lock through the rear wheel and cable through the front and you're done; to transport it you can simply tie the cable around your waist (it has a velcro strap on it) and not worry about hurting yourself with it in a fall like a NY chain.

I might still want a full chain in a more a theft-heavy city, but it's perfect for where I live.
