OKES Wooden Lifestyle Bike

okes wooden lifestyle bike

The OKES Wooden Lifestyle Bike comes from dutch designer Reinier Korstanje. Its frame is made from solid hardwood. According to Korstanje’s site:

The name OKES came from a South-African ‘slang-word’. The word okes is used to describe a group of people by the younger generation. On the streets of Cape Town you can say: ‘ those okes have cool bikes’ This OKES bike frame is made out of high quality solid French oak wood. Classic bike frames are made of metal pipes, this limits the shape when designing a bike. Using a solid material instead, the design possibilities are endless. The pure and stylish frame is created by using slid oak wood. The frame is CNC-cut in a little town in Belgium at Hout Ambacht, a factory making high quality, custom, solid oak interior products.

Yeah, no kidding, I mean he should have used wild cherry instead of oak.

It’s an interesting design… I’m not sure how I feel about that little hook shaped bit near the ground, the one near the pedal in the photo.

French Oak, aka White oak, is a decent choice. It’s very water resistant.

I’m not convinced CNC machining a frame like that offers any benefits, be they aesthetic or technical, over a laminated from like these:
