NIKE78 is a design collaboration between NIKE and 78 creatives to take a pair of shoes and rework them into a new function. One such project was that of Dan Mather and his SPD NIKE Waffle Racers. Recess the cleat and we’ve got a winner, it’s honestly surprising to me that major shoe makers haven’t taken existing shoes with some street-style and integrated a cleat in the bottom. Besides this NIKE78, I’ve seen a number of other such hacks out there of popular shoes. When will we see production Sambas or Air Force 1s out there with a two-bolt cleat?

Great idea, I would like to see Vans and Simple jump onto something like this.
I’d wear SPD Sambas in a heartbeat…
having owned a number of “street” shoes with SPDs, i can say that they haven’t really caught on because they are not really very streetable in the long run. i’ve had the Vans with SPD-compat soles and i currently have the Nike Gyziro Dunks, and i never really wear them.
I have SPD shoes that are perfectly fine for walking around because the cleat is recessed enough in the treads of the shoes. These do not look like the kind of shoe that would be easy to walk around in.
VANS does make shoes like these. They have been for like 10+ years. you can get them online. Keen does too.

ive made a pair from very old air force ones and they work ok, so id imagine a major design firm with resources at their disposal could make something ok.
if they could get rid of the laces . . . don’t know how many times i’ve gotten laces wound around my crank or grabbed by my big ring . . .
That cleat system blows, can’t tell you how many times i have pulled out in risky situations, but with a brake i guess there ok.
GET ME THE NIKE VANDAL!
Keen makes some very nice shoes with recessed SPD cleats that are base on their non-cleat models.
The best kicks, I fucking love my pair. Sick shot.
Over in Santa Cruz these are being custom made to order, one pair at a time….
