Mountain Bike Philadelphia

Philadelphia may not be known as a mountain bike destination, but it should be. Within the city limits lies a 1800 acre park of dense wooded singletrack, long climbs, fast descents, and miles of flow induced mountain bike hammering. Naturally, being in Philadelphia, it has a long and amusing history and nowhere else is such an extensive mountain bike system within reach of the urban dweller.

For what it is worth, the road is referred to as “Forbidden Drive”, not “Forbidden Road” as stated in the article.

I was born and raised in Philly. I got my first mtn bike when I went to college in Western PA but surprisingly enough, I didn’t ride a lot of trails out there. I moved back to Philly in 1995 and bought a Trek 830. Because I thought I was the man, and I had the rig to prove it, I took my bike to the trails up the Wissahickon. I went to trails I remembered as a kid. Anyway, I got out there and started tearing it up. But of course I took it too far. Those trails are no joke. I damn near killed myself and destroyed my bike. I had to ride back to 10th and Pine on one crank arm, a broken seat post, and rear rim, bent to shit!

These days I live in NYC but come to Philly to visit my family pretty often. Whenever possible, I bring my current bike (’07 Kona Stinky/7″ travel), and even with this beast, these trails are a true challenge. Here are words that aren’t uttered too often, “I really earned how to mountain bike in Philly.”

Get out there people. There are trail for all skill levels. What a great gem to have near the heart of the city.
