Mother/Daughter Independent Fabrication Bikes

On a visit to the new Independent Fabrication space last month I spied this pair of IF bikes in owner Gary and Toni’s garage. Not quite a true matching pair, the bike on the right is Toni’s titanium Crown Jewel, with a one-off steel mini Crown Jewel road bike for Gary and Toni’s daughter on the left. The mini bike is no slouch with King hubs and tiny BMX cranks to match the pre-teen legs the bike is meant for. Believe it or not, the large of the pair is also the lighter of the two.

I love seeing the custom, over the top kids bikes that companies end up making for children close to the company. Impractical for all but the most in-the-know parents, the bikes certainly show an overwhelming passion for the sport.

Not totally impractical! I brazed up a frame for my pre-teen son knowing that all the parts will work fine for his next frame. I spent allot more on parts than tubing… of course my son’s bike is not an IF but he rides it with pride and it was a blast to build.
