Mit dem Fahrrad unterwegs

From Achim Dunker: I am not a fan of folding bikes, but at the German ICE- Train it is not possible to travel with a normal bike. So made a transport bag for the singlespeed. It takes five minutes to dismantle and relaxed ten minutes to fix it.

  • Or you can just buy a normal bike bag, remove wheels, turn handle bars, slam seat down, take off just the pedals. I’ve done this on ICE trains a fair bit and no one’s ever asked a question.

  • 5 minutes my ass. Looks like it took him at least 20 in the video. Removing both crank arms? Come on. Now you need to carry around a heavy ass crank arm remover.

Anyway, it looks a lot like the Tardis bag by Ground Effect.

  • And actually, Sugino self-extracting crank bolts do kind of lessen the heavy ass wrench and complicated removal pain.

  • Or you could just get a folding bike. Seriously, this isn’t really a solution unless you’re stubborn about using only one type of bike. There are solutions to the multi-modal commute problem that don’t involve this level of hassle and pain.

  • Love my S&S coupler surly. I love being able to stash it in the trunk of a car rather quickly.
Especially when traveling with a rental car / taxi.
It Might even pass on a bus, ferry or train that otherwise wouldn’t take bikes.

It takes more effort (half hour) to get it packed in the flight case but I haven’t had to take the cranks off.

If I really needed a folder for regular commuting I wouldn’t hesitate. Except deciding which model!

  • Plus, you could simply take off the pedals. That’s what I’ve done when travelling, then turn the stem, flip down bars, no need to take all that off.
