IIRC, MIT engineering students estimated the efficiency of a well-aligned, well-lubricated chain drive at 98%. I wonder how efficient this setup is…

Why do people insist on trying to re-invent the wheel? The chain and sprocket system has worked on bicycles for over 100 years for a reason. Give it up.
I don’t get it either. How can this be more efficient than a good old chain? It might be cleaner, but so is a belt drive system.
