Mamachari Etymology

A while back Urban Velo ran an article on cycling in Tokyo, where our author, Daniel McCloskey, introduced readers to the Japanese term “mamachari”. Recently, Cyclelicio.us posted an interesting piece on Japanese etymology, too.

Great articles. I’m an American in Tokyo and there is such a great bike culture here. Good to see some other people enjoying it too. Thanks

    Domo arigato gozaimasu, Jeff-san!

As an American teen living in a Tokyo suburb in the late 70s & 80s, bike culture then consisted of mamachari, saraiiman riding bikes to the JNR stations, and my American friends and I riding like maniacs through Tokyo traffic on our BMX bikes.
