Louisville Bike Polo Derby Debauchery

It seems appropriate that one the very weekend of the Kentucky Derby in Louisville that a few dozen players from around the mid-section of the country converged to play the ancient game of polo. So we were on bikes, and the only horse that I saw all weekend was constructed of paper-mache, but the goal was lots of polo with friends and there was no doubt that everyone was able to play as much as they could possibly desire. I pulled into the derelict parking garage that hosts Louisville Hardcourt a few nights per week at roughly 9:30 pm Friday night, and managed to play pick-up until roughly 3 am, with others staying until the birds were chirping. Saturday saw a double elimination tournament culminating in the final game with paper mache horses attached to each bike, with the usual suspects from Milwaukee taking the crown against a team from Atlanta. Of course, this was followed by more pickup on the outdoor tennis courts that the city has leased to the local polo club until dark when the prizes were given away at some bar we made a quick appearance at before making our way to even more pickup in the garage, yet again to the wee hours. Summer weather on Sunday brought even more pickup, along with a sunburn. Perhaps the most polo I’ve played in a given out of town weekend, the weekend was a success in my book even if the promised debauchery never made it past the polo court. Thanks to our hosts for the killer weekend, I left thinking of polo and late night Batman and perhaps bringing some ear plugs for my next trip to the fine state of Kentucky.
