It’s All About the Bike

I’m a sucker for these detailed and descriptive approaches to manufacturing. Robert Penn writes about his journey to source the bike of his life, one he will take to his grave, but also drags us around history, science and culture in the process.

It must be nice to have the privilege to seek out each part of your bike on such an intimate level, but let’s be honest, most of us would do the same if we had the chance. It’s nice to live vicariously through someone who took hold of the opportunity. You can do just that through Penn’s book.

The book is well worth buying. It is an education in bike building and bike people.

I second Bill’s note. Penn is a fantastic writer, and he will hook you within the first couple of pages.

I, too, read this the book. Dare I say that if you love bikes you will love this book? For me it was a fascinating read that I thoroughly enjoyed.

You don’t have to be a gear head to enjoy this book. Rob provides plenty of things, including a ride down Repack worth the read…

just to provide an alternative perspective, i disliked this book intensely. i get what he was trying to share and realise he loves cycling, but i felt came over with a condescending and sneering attitude towards anyone who would consider buying a factory produced bike. my feeling is it’s still a bike, and you can still ride it. and before you jump on me for having besmirched Rob’s good name, i’m only posting because i think providing alternative perspectives helps other readers decide whether to buy a book.
