IKEA Gives 12,400 Bikes to Employees

According to Business Wire: “It’s been a good year for IKEA, so what better way to celebrate our success than to thank our IKEA co-workers who made this happen. Our big reveal today will be a fun day as we unload 12,400 new bikes at IKEA US locations. This is our way of saying ‘thanks IKEA co-workers for being strongly committed to working together.’ We hope this bike will be taken in the spirit of the season while supporting a healthy lifestyle and everyday sustainable transport,” commented Mike Ward, IKEA US President.

That’s pretty cool that Ikea would do this. That’s a whole lotta bikes!

A bike is a cool idea but. . . how stoked are the employees going to be to get the bike pictured. It looks like a Walmart mountain bike. I imagine most employees would prefer a small cash bonus instead.

mh, I think you’d be really surprised. Most of the coworkers in my store were totally thrilled to get this bike! I for sure was! :0)

And about the “looks” of the bike. Well, there are only 12,400 of these unlike many of the others on the market today, these are “truly” unique.

I’m going out today to buy my helemet. :0)

Well, the rub to this story is their deflection over the bike-lane fight…

@ mh most everyone at my store was really excited to receive their bike. I can’t wait to start putting mine together! I know our store is donating the bikes that the co-workers don’t want to a local charity. Thanks IKEA!

Ouch. Suburban ‘Mountain’ Bike. Weak on the trails, worse on the road. No fenders, nowhere to attach a rack, no ergonomics = no commuting. This is the WalMart version of a roofrack ornament. Such a great idea with Mr. Burns execution. Next year, maybe expired bus passes to get employees into transit?

hey. you know why i’m excited to get mine? because its free. that’s good enough reason for me.

Ok. These bikes probably cost them around $25 to buy from one of the cheaper factories in the far east. Then they waste money/natural resources to ship them over here.

I always disagreed with people who said IKEA sold shoddy merchandise, but this changes my mind.

How much do you want to bet that they end up having to recall the bikes next year for safety reasons.
