How Biking Can Save Cities Billions of Dollars in Health Expenses

From Good.is:

Nearly 70 percent of Americans’ car trips are less than two miles long. It’s a no-brainer that biking instead of driving to take care of these trips is a great way to get exercise while cutting air pollution. While we’ve always assumed that the cumulative effect of many individuals making that choice would be longer, healthier lives and cleaner air in our cities, a recent scientific study put some rigor to our hypotheses and proved us right.

  • I thought it was going to be about how being stuck in traffic behind a bunch of idiots causes high blood pressure and ulcers. hahhaha.

  • This is a great article about how we as a society could benefit from doing one simple thing, cycling for our short range transportation needs. Though most cities have a bicycle master plan, I still find that far too few establishments provide bike racks to accommodate cyclists. Thanks for the article.

  • Motoring’s hidden costs are shocking – even in Frostbite Falls, MN. I was surprised to see this from the American Automobile Association in the Las Vegas Sun last week –

“The average cost of a fatality on the road is $6 million, AAA said. That includes the cost of emergency responders, travel delays, medical bills, lost wages and productivity and other factors. An injury crash similarly costs $126,000, the report said.

“In 2009, the Las Vegas metropolitan area had 144 fatal crashes and 22,595 injuries from crashes, the report said. That puts the cost of fatalities in Las Vegas at $64 million and the cost of injures here at $2.8 billion.

“Combined, the total cost of vehicle crashes in Las Vegas that year was $3.7 billion, or $1,950 per person in the metro area.”

These are motoring advocates? Here’s a link to the AAA report –

As for bike parking, there oughta be a page shaming chains and franchises that can’t be bothered. If there is such a page, let me know, so I can bitch to some effect!

    not shocking at all.

what hidden costs??? you pay for fuel (hiway taxes built in), financing, maintenance and ambulances would operate anyway.

fireplaces have cause e much more discomfort than car exhaust.

  • I haven’t heard of anyone being run over by a fireplace lately, but I did hear just this morning of a NYC pedestrian advocate hit by a car and killed.
