Horror at Critical Mass in Brazil

The above video is quite graphic, starting at about 0:56 when an automobile charges into a crowd of Critical Mass bikers in Porto Alegre, Brazil. Thankfully, nobody was killed, but at least 15 were injured, eight of them severely. The driver apparently abandoned their car shortly after, and the Brazilian news article does not say if they were apprehended.

According to the news here in Brazil, the driver was merely asked to show up at the police department on Monday (28/02). No apprehension.

I just came from reddit where I saw this. I didn’t know what I was watching because I hadn’t read the description, and nearly vomited at the horrific scene. Even more disturbing, though, was the number of reddit commenters who pulled out the “they were asking for it” apologist bullshit. I have so little faith in humanity right now.

this is really graphic… I would post a more strongly worded waring…

I wish I hadn’t seen this and I’ve seen a lot of stuff on the internets.

    Just disgusting.

I hope they find the driver of this vehicle and if he doesn’t receive life imprisonment that someone finds him and amputates his legs.

This is what things have come to around the world for cyclists.
Watch your backs guys! This thing could start a copy cat deal and others may be hurt.
As you can read others are totally ok with doing the same thing and believe you as cyclist deserve it. Be careful!

    From BBC this morning –

The driver said he accelerated because cyclists were banging on his car and he feared he would be attacked.

No-one was killed and the injured have all been released from hospital.

The driver, Ricardo Neis, 47, fled the scene of the incident but was brought in for questioning after his abandoned car was found.

Police said he could face a charge of attempted homicide.

Cyclists in the demonstration said no riders had threatened the motorist.

Absolutely disgusting!! He feared for his life! I am sick of this excuse and bullshit. If I had a gun and fired it in a crowd. Think my defense would work if I said I feared for my life? Point being the vehicle becomes the weapon. I am located in Canada we had a incident with a well known politician. http://www.thestar.com/news/gta/crime/article/813872. So in both cases after going through dozens of cyclists or dragging a cyclist for half a kilometer makes you liable for you’re actions. I don’t give a shit whether you are afraid or not. Hopefully the Brazilian police do the right thing and charge this prick.

I sure hope this jerk off gets what he deserves. I have waited it twice now and wanna cry. This is one of the most sickening things I have ever seen. What would drive a person to do this?

  12. danoMarch 2, 2011 at 10:19 am

Automobiles don’t drive themselves. Saying “an automobile charges into a crowd” removes the accountability of the driver, which seems like an important part of this story.

“The driver apparently abandoned their (use his or just say ‘the driver apparently abandoned the car’) car shortly after, and the Brazilian news article does not say if they (HE, not they. How many people were operating the car?) were apprehended.”

The shoddy writing of these THREE SENTENCES totally distracted me from the point. I know this is a blog, but clear and accurate writing will only help your cause.

From the NY Times this morning –

The police tracked the man suspected of being the driver, Ricardo José Neis, 47, to a private psychiatric clinic that he checked himself into on Tuesday. On Wednesday he was placed under detention there on suspicion of deliberately driving into the riders.

The city’s police chief, Rodrigo Pohlmann Garcia, said he expected Mr. Neis to be moved to a prison in the next few days.

“We found him in a hospital last night, and doctors told me he was emotionally unstable and suicidal, so we are keeping him in a psychiatric institution for the time being,” Mr. Garcia said.
