GW’s Fixed Gear Disc Brake

GW’s Fixed Gear Disc Brake

No, not GW Bush. Our friend GW. A bike tinkerer to the core, GW devised a clever fixed-gear disc brake mount last summer. Check it out.

Is the caliper mounted to the seat tube or down tube? Id hate to see what would happen if one of those were to fail…. yikes.

Sycip Bikes had something really similar at the last NAHBS.

Sysip had a similar set up ad the handmade show… who inspired whom?

    I saw GW’s first. I’m pretty sure he didn’t have access to Sycip’s R&D lab. ;)

sweet, but aren’t most Aluminum frames heat treated? I’d be interested how this was overcome.

    uh, why?
seems potentially dangerous, possibly less efficient than normal brake set ups and a good way to burn your ankle.

Why? It’s a freak bike. That is all. It’s an interesting sensation to ride, but truly solves no problems. Braking force is no better than having only a fixed gear and no brake, though you can modulate it a bit better than backpedaling. You still run the risk of brake failure in the event of the chain popping off, and the current setup both limits gear choice and leaves the disc exposed under the bb shell.

But it’s a freak bike. Fun experimentation is always good, even if the ultimate utility is questionable.

YEAH! FREAKBIKES. Thanks Jeff, your honesty is one of many reasons I love UV.
