I found myself riding around the city of Indianapolis taking photos of various graffiti spots for a book project I’m working on and suddenly realized how accessible these shots were on a bike. If I had been in a car trying to get shots I would most likely have driven past some solid locations, struggled to find parking to get quick shots and the whole process would have been a great nuisance. Instead, I was able to cruise around and roll up on spots I hadn’t seen yet due to my slower riding pace.
So I felt a kinship to this trailer about fashion photographer, Bill Cunningham, who you will know more as the guy who is responsible for the On The Street section in The New York Times. A wholely fascinating character with more integrity in his pinky than most people develop their entire lives, his preferred method of getting around the city to get fashion shots is on his bike. He spends most of his day riding around the city documenting the style of the everyman and although the bike isn’t the focus of this video, it’s an interesting component. The guy has been through a lot for sure, evidenced by having 28 bikes stolen!
I would love to see someone do an in-depth interview with Mr. Cunningham about his perspective on the bike and associated adventures.
Via It’s Nice That.
More on the documentary here.
More on Bill Cunningham and a photo of one of his (stolen?) bikes here.

Funny coincidence to see this movie mentioned here. My wife and I just watched this not long ago. Great movie. Bill Cunningham seems like a great guy, very likable.

I was fortunate to capture Mr.Cunningham in action this year.
Hey cool, Marcel. Did you talk to him?
@Lane, no I didn’t. He was seriously at work, like he was in a zone. Plus, I was focused on photographing him! The hunter became the hunted, so to speak.
