I’ve always thought New York’s reputation for having a bad attitude was unwarranted. Still, there are a few bad apples. Take this September 1st incident for example. Bike commuter Anna Letitia Mumford was riding in the bike lane after crossing the Manhattan Bridge when a motorist decided to use the bike lane to escape the traffic gridlock. When Mumford attempted to notify the driver that she was blocking the bike lane at a red light, the driver got irate and punched her in the face.
The story gets worse. The police not only refused to even acknowledge that the driver was blatantly violating the law and putting the public in harm’s way, they encouraged Mumford not to press charges. Read the entire article over at The Gothamist.

Aim for the nuts, claim self defense, young lady.
The driver was also a female.
Headbutt her in the ovaries!
That’s too sad. It is my unfortunate experience to know that some of the most discourteous, rude and aggressive drivers are also women.
I would’ve punched her back.
Now now, no need to bring misogyny into the picture, too. The gender of either party doesn’t really matter so much as a motorist punched a cyclist in the friggin’ face and the police didn’t do a damn thing.
physical conflict with drivers is generally a bad idea, although it is understandable that we (cyclists) feel its warranted. check this link for conflict gone really bad – http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/toronto/crown-faces-challenge-in-giving-former-a-g-a-fair-trial/article1275368/#video
i feel sorry for the lady who got the knuckle sandwich. it could have been alot worse.
be careful out there people.
I rode in NYC for years and despite much civic improvement for cyclists the cops seem not to be behind more bikes on the streets. It’s another sickening sign of how political battles and big heads can really hold a community back. Get a few cops enforcing bikers right and maybe even get a few cops riding around and I see the over all non-riding public giving (and possibly thus receiving) more respect to cyclists… one could hope anyway.
