Sometimes the best designs come from simple ideas. The people at Dosun recognized the value of old school pedal reflectors, but thought the design could be improved by adding a self-contained light source. Even better, that light source could be powered by micro generators in the pedal. It has eight LED lights per pedal, angled at 0°, 45° and 90°. And they’ve got self-contained capacitors, so the pedals can keep blinking for up to 90 seconds after the last pedal rotation. It then only takes 30 seconds of pedaling to completely recharge the capacitor.

A good idea in principle, but it’s the execution in real life that is a let-down. I tried a similar pair of pedals three years ago, only to see the poorly-sealed units give up at the first hint of moisture or use. The shoddy bearings lasted six moths longer than the lights.
I don’t know whether these examples are any better but as with all things, if it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing properly.

I remember when these (or a similar set) came out a couple years ago. Great idea and smart solution to battery waste, but if they ain’t rock-solid and waterproof they won’t last long.

Personally I prefer the design of the Glowspek pedal I linked to as opposed to the rubber grip surfaces of the Dosun.
