How much does a bicycle company like Cannondale run? Try about $200 million. Thats the deal just sealed between Dorel Industries and Cannondale Bicycle Corporation as reported by Bicycle Retailer and Industry News. Dorel Industries is also the owner of Pacific Cycle, the umbrella company that holds Schwinn, GT and Mongoose and concentrates on the mass-market sector. Roadmaster? That’s them too, along with a handful of other smaller labels. The Cannondale brand will still be restricted to independent bicycle dealers with no word on the fate of the Bedford, PA Cannondale factory or the Sugoi clothing brand, also acquired in this deal.
Prior to this purchase, Dorel was responsible for about 1/3 of all bicycles sold in the United States.
great, just what we need. more corporate consolidation and less, variety!
My guess is they essentially bought the name and will move production overseas where the rest of their brands are manufactured. Hope I’m wrong on this one; we’ll see.
But what about LeBron James’ share?
The fact that most of the aluminum Cannondale bikes were handmade in PA has been a huge selling point for the brand.
Let’s hope that Dorel will learn a lesson from Pacific’s FAILURES about taking a brand name out of the local bike shop to the walmart’s of the world! I know it is all about the dollar but some will pay more for Quality product and service at a local IBD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So now maybe we’ll see the lefty fork replaced with those sweet 2 inch travel triple crown forks found on the other WalMart bikes!
Cannondale is certainly full of innovations, but this new move seems like it will kill their reputation. I think they will lose credibility under Dorel…even if their method of production stays the same. There’s nothing hip about buying a bike from a company that also sells furniture and baby strollers…
That’s really sad. Another corporate buy-out. I’d say it’s time to go out and buy a real Cannondale while you still can.
