We'd have also failed if we had been asked to look for a moonwalking bear and then were asked something specific about the people with the basketballs. In my opinion, the "test" is meaningless. It's akin to car drivers being told to keep an eye on their speedometer, then being surprised when they have an accident. Driving a car/truck/van/whatever responsibly means being alert and aware of what's going on at all times, and not being distracted by irrelevant information (the number of passes the white team is making).
