Detroit Dreamcyclers
Nineteen students from the University of Michigan School of Art and Design got together at the recent North American International Auto Show in Detroit with a bike themed performance art piece, walking around the show with used bicycle handlebars stopping throughout the halls. “Detroit Dreamcyclers.” I was never cut out for art school, I don’t get it.

It looks a bit awkward, but it is about the “missing” alternative to all the gas guzzling internal gas combustion vehicles- human powered vehicles- bikes. I like the freezing in place. A protest against the car by virtue(s) of the bicycle. I like the protest.

Even though I consider myself a strong part of Ann Arbor’s cycling community, seeing this causes me embarrassment. I mean yay, an Art!
nice to see an attempt for cycling to be used too..?
But I am missing the protest, and a logical, relavent statement being made.
I dont get it either, or maybe Im just resisting the urge to say, “haha look at those dumb U of M hipsters making some Arts” like the rest of the show might have been saying.

I liked it. I thought the contrast was an important statement and their presence was a valid contribution to the transportation industry. I think it would have worked better had they simply walked around holding the handle bars, not doing the pretend to riding part which was a bit silly.
Ride on!
