Dashcam Captures Post-Accident Bike Theft

What’s worse than being hit by a car on the way to your girlfriend’s house? Having your bike stolen while being tended to by paramedics has to be on the list. From Kansas City based ABC affiliate KMBC:

Witnesses told her she had struck a bicyclist. As Hardy laid in the street, his bike was taken to the side of the street. He said he tried to keep an eye on it while the firefighters and paramedics.

That’s when thieves nonchalantly tested the bike to ensure it worked and then took off with it. These were the same men who had checked on Hardy immediately after the crash.

Soma Fabrications heard the news and offered to send the injured Mike Hardy a replacement frameset, which he accepted only after a month of the bike still being missing. See the dashcam video at the KMBC news report.

I can’t tell you how much I hate bike thieves… (in fact, pretty well all kinds of thieves)…

I live in Manchester, UK. I’ve only been cycling for 10 years. I’ve had 14 bikes stolen. This figure does not include stolen wheels.

By contrast, the motorists here are so kind and tolerant towards us (at least, according to personal experience). On more than one occasion has a motorist who has cut it fine, turning left just in front of me, stopped his car, got out, called me over – and apologized to me!

The world is divided ultimately into two kinds of people: not the rich and the poor, not the cyclist and the motorist, not male and female, not fat and thin… but the good and the bad.

The same person that came over and checked on the riders condition is probsbly the one who stole the bike. They just wanted to be sure the bike rider wasn’t going to get up any time soon . Shame that there are these low life individuals in todays society . I just hope the young man had insurance.

Karma is what you make it, and I do believe they have just made some shitty shit cakes for themselves.

I don’t know all the circumstances surrounding the accident, but I have ridden that stretch of road – not that much traffic and decent visibility. I have to think that the driver wasn’t too attentive. The area of the incident is midtown in Kansas City. It isn’t the highest crime area in KC by any means, but theft is a problem.
