Crank Brothers Candy 3 Pedals
Crank Brothers’ Candy 3 pedals are much like the Candy 2 pedals that I reviewed last year, but with two major upgrades that merit not only an increase in price, but a slight weight penalty in exchange for quality.
To recap, the Candy 2 and 3 pedals have a two-piece machined aluminum body, forged chromoly steel spindles, stainless steel springs and a cartridge outer bearing. The first difference is that the Candy 3′s feature cast steel wings that hold the cleat as opposed to the stamped steel featured on the 2′s. This difference in manufacturing results in stronger, more durable pedals. This is especially helpful for people who’s riding style makes them prone to pedal strikes, as the Candy’s design inherently puts the retention mechanism at risk.
The other upgrade is in the bearing department, where the inner bearing on the 2′s is a simple bushing (or journal bearing) the 3′s feature needle bearings on the inside. This not only reduces friction, it helps the pedals to last longer. The upgrade amounts to 4 g per pedal, making the 3′s weigh in at 304 g per pair as opposed to 296 g for the 2′s.
The Candy 3 pedals retail for $120 and carry a five year warranty. Visit www.crankbrothers.com for more info.
