Comments on: Cop “Retaliates” Against Cyclist

Not that it excuses retaliation, but the cyclist really had no idea why the cop was blocking the crosswalk…possibly surveilling the bike path, remained parked there after ticketing/assisting another who had already left the scene. The cyclist should’ve just went around his car without comment. More importantly, why is this guy riding in front of a car stopped in his path…that’s asking to get run over by an inattentive driver…what if the cop made a right turn on red just as he (the cyclist) rode in front of him.

In these situations I prefer friendly awareness. I ride up to the blocking vehicle, then stop while making it blatantly obvious that they’re blocking my path which usually elicits a sheepish grin of apology from the driver. Hopefully our interaction will help them to be more cyclist aware and let them know all cyclists aren’t jerks, and above all…I reduce my chances of being hit.

Tap on the roof of an unmarked Minneapolis police vehicle blocking the entire bike lane, and part of the auto lane? Get handcuffed, then tossed around like a ragdoll after the cop breaks yer Rx glasses.
In fairness, Minneapolis was not rated the #1 Bike City at the time.

The one thing I find humorous is that the officer was blocking the entire pathway. Though most people ignore that rule across the country. As far as the sitch with the light, I don’t know the laws for NY.

the cop’s being a dick but hey, being a dick is his job. on the other hand, i do something like this guy did every day and have never gotten a ticket, because i always have a reasonable explanation and cops here (france) tend to be reasonable people. not an anti-american dig (not my overall weltanshauung), just a simple fact discovered in 20 years of living here.

If the cop is stopped at a light then the light must have been green for the cyclist right? This was retaliation caught on tape.

Technically, he should have stopped. Once the light changes to red and starts blinking you are no longer allowed to start the crossing.

But practically speaking, roads that use the blinky red lights for ped traffic hold the green lights only for a couple seconds and people usually ignore the green-light rule. I hate this design. It feels as if once the light turns solid red the drivers are allowed to plow through …
