I think cyclists are very selfish and if they are going to drive out in the street acting like immortals, then let them. Lots of drivers simply look the other way if they think it will get messy. Not much a cyclist can do, other then get the fuck out of the way. Cyclists are like overgrown youngsters who like to look more significant then they actually are. All they do impose at the motorists expense. It's like a cyclist's very own manifest destiny.

I understand a bicyclist who isnt going a minimal speed. There are times I am flying on my bike and trying to make a left turn. I am waiting for the oncoming cars to pass and time my turn so I do not have to brake. I'm heading a good amount of speed. The driver of the car behind me gets upset because he wants to pass me and race to the red light ahead.

Whats his problem I ask? He is a jerk who cant wait one second. I am flying and have a right to make a left hand turn like any vehicle.

"I am constantly amazed by the selfishness and sense of entitlement that these people have"

Try riding a bike around cars on roads we're supposed to share! If cyclists all universalized the actions of douchebag drivers the way that drivers universalize the actions of douchebag cyclists, we'd resort to smashing mirrors and windshields by now. You think we need to understand "the typical experience drivers get"? Try understanding the typical experience we encounter: dozens (at least) of cars who are not paying attention to us and who could flatten us. Cars who are more concerned with what WE do, rather than what THEY do, which gets us killed.

You think we could kill YOU with our selfishness? If you and the cyclist collided, you'd win, no matter who was in the wrong. What would you have said if it was another car going that slowly? Would you call that driver selfish and entitled? You both wanted to use the road. If they are selfish for wanting to use it the way they want to, so are you.

If you had a 4-year old in the car, I would think you would be more patient and not angry enough to feel the need to vent cyclist hate online. You accuse cyclists of selfishness and a sense of entitlement and then go ahead and say, "they had no business being on the road." Were you being ironic? You don't see the ridiculousness in your rant? You're mad at them for acting like they owned the road, and they you talk like you do? Seriously?

TRUE STORY: driving towards tiny town, two bicyclists decided they want to ride the road (is this common?). I slow down behind them, the turns up ahead too close for me to safely pass. I am driving at 5-10 mph and one of the cyclists slows down, pulls to the right, attempting to let me pass (into a spot between him and a rider who has pulled ahead, great, that's just what I need). There is a turn up ahead which I have no visibility around, so obviously I do NOT attempt to pass him by pulling into the other lane. He gives me 2-3 seconds, throws his arm in the air in disgust, swerving into the lane when he does so, like he tried to be accommodating, but since I didn't pass when he thought I should, he wouldn't even bother trying again. THERE WAS A CURVE RIGHT THERE WITH NO VISIBILITY? I am constantly amazed by the selfishness and sense of entitlement that these people have - they had no business being on that road, but of course, that doesn't even enter into their decision making. He is such the typical experience that drivers get, and bicyclists don't appreciate. He was dangerous to himself, and to anyone riding near him, and I had a 4 year old in the car. There simply are roads which should be off-limits to the bikes, in the mountains especially.

There is a video on u-tube called “Unsafe Cyclist in Montgomery County Maryland” it shows that bicyclist violating the law. The bicyclist act as thought they are above the law. We need to work together to stop this Scofflaw Cyclist. Video tape them publish it and call the police, your local Council person and demand that bikes follow the same laws as cars an request the ticketing and impoundment of bikes the same way they do cars...

you're absolutely right, vector.
a few jerks represent us all.
so the five people that almost ran me over this morning represent all drivers, LIKE YOU.
i think THAT says it all.

I keep reading "just wait for a safe place to pass", but in driving from Lyons to Boulder and following a pack of cyclists riding 5 wide and 40 deep, it is obvious they are not following the cycling laws. It is even worse when that same pack is on a small mountain road and taking up both lanes.

I had the great pleasure of having a cyclist broadside my car on a mountain intersection when he blew by a stop sign. Even after the police arrived he kept screaming, "HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN PAYING ATTENTION TO ME!" I think that says it all.

The gasoline tax only goes into the federal road budget and so is used mostly for highways. Local and county roads are paid mostly through sales and property tax and sometimes state and local income tax. I think that most cyclists pay their share and then some.

Driving has been defined as a "privilege" rather than a "right." Freedom to travel (unless you are in prison) is generally a right. Making driving a privilege certainly crowds on that right, but given the potential to inflict lethal damage with a car, licensing is probably necessary.

However, biking and walking do not generally pose a lethal danger to others so I would hate to see biking go from a right to a licensed privilege.
