Over the years there’s been about a brazilian bad ideas for improving the bicycle. Charlie Kelly collected a few of his favorite bike blunders to share on his website. (For those who don’t know, Charlie Kelly was a pioneer in the world of mountain bikes. Today he’s a pioneer in the world of piano moving.)
When you’re done with page one, move on to page two for more eccentric pedal powered inventions. Absurd as it may seem, a lot of these products still manage to turn up at the annual bicycle trade show year after year.

makes me feel old having memories of seeing so many of these absurd contraptions in their original ads reading through bike magazines as i was growing up…
Unfortunately for all involved, actually taking pictures of these contraptions at Interbike is largely frowned upon. I’ve tried and tried, but in general the hucksters working the booths holding these gems seem to know that they are selling turds, unpolished. I’ve been shoo’ed away a few times from learning more about such glorious products.
too bad he has a right- and left side drive bike. inconsistent, inconsistent.
I suddenly feel so young! These were all new to me. Quit fretting about pix at Interbike and go for road tests – they’d be a hoot – and there’ll be new bright ideas born all the time, especially now, a period much like the ’70s. Your biggest problem might be finding a “corps of test riders without fear”. I gotta see that surf-bike in action!
Thanks for the props, but in the world of piano moving, I am hardly a pioneer. People have been doing that ever since the thing was invented.
Doesn’t mean I don’t have a few pretty good stories. What I like about piano moving is that you can’t have it done in China.
