Turn Pain Into Power: A Rally for Bicycle Safety

12PM Februrary 10th, UC Santa Cruz (At the beginning of the Great Meadow pathway, near recital hall). Adrian Burgueño’s bicycle advocacy and legacy will continue to live through us and we will be his voice to raise awareness on bicycle safety. Heading home from school after his evening class about one year from today, taking all the safety measures a cyclist can take, riding on an extremely dangerous bike path on campus, his beautiful young life was cut short. He would be 22.

There will be a peaceful rally to commemorate Adrian’s passing this week. Let’s all gather to raise awareness and speak upon the dangers of this bicycle path. As an activist he was, he would be among the first to organize and participate for such event.

This will take place on the UCSC campus At the beginning of the Great Meadow pathway, near the recital hall, this Friday, February 10th at noon. If you or someone you know in the Santa Cruz area has experienced the dangers of this path, message this page directly. Pass the word, share this event’s info and please join us for this rally.

CMWC 2012 Chicago, August 3-5

The 20th annual Cycle Messenger World Championships will be held in Chicago this year, August 3-5th 2012. Part party and gathering of the tribe, part serious competition to determine the fastest courier rankings, the CMWC is a remarkable event and part of urban cycling history and lore. The Chicago running should be quite excellent, as the core group was involved in the 2008 Chicago running of the North American Cycle Courier Championships which by all accounts went quite well. We hope to see you in Chicago this coming August.

There are any number of words that you can use to describe Erik Noren; brash, creative, hard-working, genius. But to convey who Erik Noren is in a tidy 8 minutes? Now that is a challenge.

We spent last night at the Jungle Theater watching the first screening of “Deep Custom” a film about Noren, the owner and sole frame builder behind Twin Cities’ based Peacock Groove.

For years Noren has been known around the Twin Cities as someone who make bikes with flair and creativity. His profile has grown around the country through events such as the North American Handmade Bike Show (NAHBS) where he displays unique designs such as the Old Style Bike.

Supermarket Street Sweep Wrap Up

The 6th Annual Supermarket Street Sweep went off without a hitch this past weekend in San Francisco. We’ve done our small part to support the event over the years, and for 2011 they brought in nearly 8000 lbs of food and nearly $10,000 of cash for the San Francisco Food Bank. Father and son cargo winners are pictured, along with their 845 lbs of food.

99 Laps Through Minneapolis

If you support the Occupy movement across the country Minneapolis now has a way to participate on two wheels. On December 1st ride 99 laps around a one mile downtown loop past the local Occupation site. Some may do all the laps, some may plug in for just a few in the afternoon. Organizers have allowed 9 hours, for the event, but not telling how long it may take.
