Bus & Bike Operators Clash in Hollywood

metroassaultcyclisthandcuff.jpgIn a story posted on www.laist.com, tensions between a L.A. cyclist and a Metro bus driver escalated into a showdown on Hollywood Blvd. Because the bus driver not only failed to pass at a safe distance, but vehimently refused to apologize for doing so, the cyclist decided to detain the bus while he called the police. Infuriated, the bus driver attempted to physically move the cyclist by advancing the vehicle, but in the end it was the cyclist and his wife who ended up in handcuffs.

At first I sided with the cyclist, being a cyclist, but then I start thinking WTF!! Was this guy doing it on principle? or what! Police in my city only consider gun fire or death an emergency, if it’s not one of the two expect to wait for 4 hours. It seems the cyclists latter actions of going home and calling the police got him more traction than standing out on the street acting like a fanatic. Fanatics don’t get respect and f#$King crazy bus drivers don’t either.

No, this man’s wild response was the right response because he wanted to be wild and did so. He did what he needed to do. Just because you need to hide behind the cops when someone does you wrong doesn’t mean anyone else ever should.

I’ve had many close calls with buses, here in FLA we have the three feet law. I will take the whole lane if I feel threatened if it pisses off crappy impatient drivers it’s not my problem.

Wild responce, I’ve been hit by busses, cars, and taxis, the busses in LA are the worst I’ve seen. All day they run red lights, take dangerous turns, and almost kill me. Another co-worker of mine had a similar moment after letting a driver know politely that he almost killed him. Even without the threat of calling the cops, the driver got out of the bus. He and several other bus drivers taunted the cyclist, and he was assaulted by the original driver. If someone reaches out to touch me I cannot tell you what might happen. Thank goodness no one got hurt. I am a courier in downtown and friends of mine have been killed by autos, more then I’d like to count.

That driver has issues, so did the one my friend ran into. Keeping a cool head is very hard when someone is playing with your life, livelyhood, and property. Each time is different, when I can get up I never really know what to expect myself or the driver to do. Most times I’ve remembered that I don’t want to go be a guest of the state again. Sometimes I’ve done some really horrible things and honestly felt bad later.

My advice is to remember this, if you can get up and walk away, or you don’t even get hit……. ……….then violence is prob. not a good idea. If you are really hurt, then you won’t be able to get up and do anything about it.

That said I really don’t blame anyone for smashing a car or a driver. I’d just like to keep cyclist on the road and out of jail.
