BLAZE Bike Light

So here’s an interesting concept that I thought might be a decent development of the trusty bike light, which everyone seems to be attempting to better, but after viewing the Kickstarter I’m not so sure anymore.

The gist is the Blaze light projects an lazer image (a bike) about 5 to 10 feet in front of the rider, acting somewhat as a light, but more as a warning to drivers and pedestrians. The light is meant to be seen in advance of the rider, so others have time to stop before they enter the cyclists’ path.

It sounds like a decent concept, but while watching the video it seems the safety effect would be negligible. I don’t know, what do you think? There is an obvious desire for this as the project is already funded with 18 days to go. If you do want one for yourself, you can still kick in around $80 to get an early bird model this spring. A little more will get you a personalized lazer etching too.

I’m curious what you think. Is this a valid safety enhancement or just a “neat idea” that doesn’t carry through?

    I’ve seen a similar concept before that projected a set of lines to either side of the bike, essentially making a moving bike lane that you are riding in. It was supposed to remind drivers to give cyclists space. Not sure what it was called at this point…

    The issue here is that this projects an image on the ground. A few feet in front of the cyclist. How many drivers are going to be able to see an image ON THE GROUND from inside their cars? In any way that is helpful to the cyclist?

    It seems like more of a statement, and yes, a boon for pedestrians who don’t want to be t-boned crossing through the bike lane at night, but otherwise…I’m not going to see that from inside my car, and unless your projecting 8 of those images in all directions, the only place I would see it is if I was directly in the way of the cyclist’s path already.

    Fun idea, execution seems lacking.

    two really bright lights mounted wide out from your bars sounds like a better idea. then people will think they are about to be hit by a car and then actually pay attention.

    Investing in a powerful light is a better first investment – I run powerful lights and there was a clear difference in motorists sneaking out to to where motorists are much more cautious because it is much more powerful than a blinker.

    There are a number of chinese laser lights on the market that ‘mark the lane’ with a line left and right. Similar thing and if a cyclist decides to wear black, have cheap ineffective lights and rely on this for safety, it is missing the mark.

    Of interest, motorists find it hard to just cyclists speed sometimes so worth considering running two lights, one powerful steady and a tiny blinker light that will give other traffic an idea of your speed, though this is really going the extra mile.

    Bright lights front and back every time. To avoid a left hook, don’t undertake just before a junction. Saving a few seconds on your journey are worth the risk.

    Is there any evidence that these things have any effect upon cyclist safety? How many car drivers look ten feet in front of a cyclist (or are even able to when seated behind the wheel of a car) and thus are able to see the laser image?

    Rather than rely upon this, I would much prefer some high power lights (maybe combined with a flashing lamp somewhere for added visibility) and a decent dose of common sense – i.e. don’t ride up the inside of traffic – especially near a left turn.
