I got a sweet new helmet today. http://www.bernunlimited.com/2008/brentwood.html It’s awesome because it has a built in hat bill :)

I got hit by a car; and I am still dead. This one time a car hit me; wait, never mind, I am dead. How come if a car hits me on a bike and kills me it is my fault? I follow traffic law, I follow bike law, but I am treated as a 2nd class pedestrian. We should prosecute drivers who kill cyclists instead of scaring people with helmet ads. Do you really think a Styrofoam shell is going to help protect your head against a 2-ton piece of metal; come on…. If a car hits you hard enough you are dead. Get over it. I am all for helmets for kids who fall over, but please, treat us like adults that can make their own decisions. If you are dumb enough to think a piece of styrofoam is going to save you from a major car wreck then you need to be more aware (maybe your dumb ass kids will pay attn too.) fucking idiot ass drivers and cyclists. Take care of yourselves you fucking morons.

    Cute. How about:

I met Jesus after running a red light on my Frejus.

A helmet is a good thing to have in that instant before impacting the ground, but it’s better to avoid bad situations in the first place. Too much emphasis is put on helmets and not enough on rider awareness. Safety has almost devolved to “wear-a-helmet-and-now-you’re-safe.”

i, for one, am tired of going to the emergency room for a broken toe, sliced open shin, mangled elbow, smashed teeth, etc, and getting dirty looks when i answer the “were you wearing a helmet?” question wrong.

yeah, give me shit about it when i actually manage to hit my head in a place where a helmet would actually have prevented something.

@ Kyle: Not doing much to disprove the idea that wearing a helmet helps prevent brain damage. Just saying.

Yeah, a helmet isn’t going to save you if a semi hits you head on. A seatbelt wouldn’t save you if a semi hit your car head on, either. But hey, if you’re dumb enough to think a couple straps of nylon are going to save you, have fun with your slightly wrinkled your shirt and your mild discomfort on hot days.

You’re right, a helmet won’t help you if you get crushed by a car. But if you get the right hook and go over the hood, it might. If you fall off your bike for whatever reason, it could come in handy. The last time I fell, I hit black ice on the way to work. Aside from the standard bumps and bruises, I also felt my head bounce off the pavement. I probably would have been fine, but the helmet saved me from a trip to the hospital and some CT scans. Of course, I might also have ended up like Natasha Richardson- walking around one minute, in a coma the next. Head injuries are funny things.

Of course, whether or not you wear a helmet is entirely up to you.

The key line in this ad is that “I lived to tell it ’cause I wore my helmet.” Overlooking the crappy rhyming. It’s a lie. There is no evidence that can be pointed to that will prove this point. Bicycle helmets don’t save lives because they can’t. Any collision with your head that is enough to kill you will do so if you are wearing a bicycle helmet or not. They may be able to prevent other types of injuries like scrapes and cuts but they will not survive a killer impact. It’s not that a helmet won’t help, just not a Styrofoam, plastic shelled bike helmet. A helmet that would be substantial enough to work would be so cumbersome that few cyclist would actually wear one. And the extra weight would likely cause a myriad of other injuries. Just look at the stats. Cycling (for the average cyclist) is a safe activity requiring no extra protective equipment.
