We met riders Tatiana Cooke, Ali Wilson-Pierce, Sadie Robinson, Emmy Micklitsch and Aaron Goldstein at the Bicycle Film Festival in Pittsburgh. The group was in the midst of a Boston to Santa Barbara bike ride, and just happened to stop by Pittsburgh on the night of the first screening. The Bike & Build mission is to build affordable housing along the way. What’s perhaps the most unique aspect of this organization is that the cyclists don’t just raise money and awareness for affordable housing, they pick up hammers and help.
Bike and Build was founded in 2002 by Marc Bush, a former Habitat Bicycle Challenge leader. This summer Bike and Build will support seven cross-country trips with over 210 participants in an effort to raise over $420,000 for affordable housing projects.
